One-Game Wonder?

One of the more intriguing Spring Training stories in Red Sox camp this year was the signing of Jonathan Lucroy.  The former All Star catcher with the Brewers had fallen on hard times in recent years.  But he had surgery in the offseason and seemed optimistic about coming back.  And he hit well in the preseason so it looked like he might be a factor on the team.  Boston had two other catchers though, so Lucroy was probably going to be used sparingly.

Lucroy made the Opening Day roster, but Christian Vazquez and Kevin Plawecki were hitting well.  Lucroy made an appearance as a defensive replacement on July 24 and did not have a plate appearance.  The next day he was designated for assignment.  There was no other interest and so he stayed with the organization, but he has been at the alternate site since with no real indication that Boston will bring him back up.

It would be fairly disappointing if Lucroy's only experience in Boston was as a defensive replacement in one game.  At least there are some cards of him out there already, including this card.

  1. Kind of amazing how a defensive replacement in a single game gets an autograph but relievers who've been with the team for years get zilch.

    1. Agreed. Still ticked about the lack of Andrew Miller and Scott Atchison cards with the Red Sox.

  3. I didn't even know Lucroy had a Red Sox card! I'm still holding on to the hope he could be part of the team this year or next.
