Red Sox Lose 3 out of 4 to O's

Well you can't win them all.  It was a rough weekend for Boston as they lost three games against the Orioles.  Sometimes teams just have your number and I guess Baltimore has been pretty tough against the Red Sox lately.

06/13:  Orioles 5 Red Sox 4 (41-27)
Boston managed to come back from down 3-0 and 4-2 to tie it in the seventh then could not come up with another run in the 13 inning game.  The winning run scored off of Alex Wilson on a bloop single with two outs.  The bullpen was impressive, but the offense sputtered.

ANDREW MILLER:  2 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts.

06/14:  Orioles 2 Red Sox 0 (41-28)

The offense could not come through at all.  Boston only managed three hits, two by Jose Iglesias.  Ryan Dempster pitched very well and deserved better than taking the loss.

JOSE IGLESIAS:  2 for 4, double

06/15:  Red Sox 5 (42-28) Orioles 4

They finally came through in this game with John Lackey pitching very well and getting offensive contributions from Mike Carp and Jonny Gomes.  They nearly gave it up however when Andrew Bailey struggled but they got out of it due to a baserunning gaffe by Alexi Casilla.

PLAYER OF THE GAME:

JONNY GOMES:  2 for 4, home run, 2 runs, RBI

06/16:  Orioles 6 Red Sox 3 (42-19)

And back to losing.  Jon Lester struggled yet again.  He did not walk anyone and struck out eight but gave up five runs in the losing effort.

Another Series Win Against the Rays

Boston has been on a bit of a roll lately and took two out of three from the Rays this week.  They were out-homered by the Rays nine to one, but managed to win anyway.

06/10:  Red Sox 10 (40-25)  Rays 8
This was a wild one.  Boston started out hot, scoring six runs in the first inning off of Alex Cobb who had pitched very well against Boston previously.  John Lackey though struggled.  He hit Matt Joyce with a pitch in the back at one point after Joyce had taken him deep once and the swung on a 3-0 count, which prompted a bench-clearing incident.  Unwritten rules, blah blah blah.  The Rays managed to tie the game in the 8th.  Then Boston took a two run lead in the ninth which Andrew Bailery promptly gave right back in the bottom of the inning.  Boston finally pushed two runs across in the 14th which won the game.  Franklin Morales got the win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME:

JARROD SALTALAMACCHIA:  4 for 7, double, 3 RBIs.

06/11:  Rays 8 Red Sox 3 (40-26)
Jon Lester's struggles continued as he walked seven and gave up three home runs.  Boston could not get the offense going in this one.  Jose De La Torre came in and pitched 3.1 innings after Lester was taken out, sparing the bullpen somewhat.

JOSE IGLESIAS:  2 for 4, run.

06/12:  Red Sox 2 (41-26) Rays 1
Alfredo Aceves returned from Pawtucket to make a spot start before being returned to the minors.  He pitched very well and Daniel Nava provided all of the offense with a two run home run.

PLAYER OF THE GAME:

ALFREDO ACEVES:  6 innings, 4 hits, 1 earned run, 4 walks, 3 strikeouts.

03/04/2013 Red Sox 5 Rays 1

Felix Doubront made his Spring debut.  He was a little rusty with a couple of walks, but he should come around.  Hopefully he builds on his rookie season.

Player of the Game: Jose Iglesias (2 for 2, 2 doubles, run).  I really want Iglesias to hit well enough to make Stephen Drew expendable.  Not that I dislike Drew, but Iglesias is so much fun to watch on defense.

02/23/2013: Rays 4, Red Sox 3

It was the first official Spring game.  Boston lost, but it's only Spring Training. 

Player of the Day: Jose Iglesias 1 for 2, home run, error.  Iglesias is fighting for the Red Sox shortstop position.  He spent most of the offseason working out with Dustin Pedroia.  He definitely started out strong though with a home run in his first game.
