One-Card Wonder Pt. 26: Guillermo Mota

You will not find Guillermo Mota's name when searching through the annals of players who played for the Boston Red Sox.  There is a pretty simple reason for this: Mota never played for Boston.  Not even in Spring Training.  This card was produced during the very short period of time after Mota was acquired by the Red Sox from the Marlins, and before he was traded to the Indians.

Mota was part of the trade that brought Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to Boston in exchange for Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez, and a couple of other minor leaguers.  Mota was expected to step into the bullpen for the Red Sox, an area of weakness in 2005.  But before Spring Training even started, Boston was in need of a center fielder after Johnny Damon defected to the Yankees.  So Mota, catcher Kelly Shoppach, and another player Boston acquired earlier in the offseason only to never appear in a Major League game with the Red Sox, Andy Marte, were all shipped off to Cleveland in exchange for Coco Crisp, Josh Bard, and David Riske.

And that was it for Guillermo Mota in Boston.  Just over two months.  Obviously this card is photoshopped as Mota never once appeared in a Red Sox uniform.

  1. I either forgot or never knew about Mota spending a few weeks in a theoretical Red Sox uniform. Zero year cards are always a fun add to the collection.
