Failure is often even more fascinating than success. I am definitely intrigued by the 1932 Boston Red Sox, the worst Red Sox team of all time. The team finished with a record of 43-111, for a winning percentage of .279 and very little went right.
Johnny Lucas is another ultra obscure player who does not even have a card made of him. Though, to be fair, there were not a ton of cards made in that time period.
Apparently, Lucas was discovered by Red Sox scouts playing in McCook in my home state of Nebraska, though he was originally from Illinois. Lucas was 28 at the time that he made his Major League debut in 1931. He played in three games that season, playing one in left field and one in center field. He had two at-bats and was hitless, striking out in one at-bat.
In 1932, Lucas spent most of the season in the minor leagues, playing in 140 games and hitting .266 with four home runs, 19 doubles and eleven triples. He played in just one Major League game early in the season, getting one at-bat in a blowout loss to the Yankees. He was hitless in that at-bat as well.
And that was pretty much it for Lucas's baseball career.
