Play Ball!

I mentioned a few days ago now that I have been buying some pre-WWII cards lately for my Red Sox collection.  Since that Julius Solters card, I have not shown anything else off.  Until these 1939 Play Ball cards:
1.  Emerson Dickman.  Dickman pitched primarily out of the bullpen during his Major League career, starting 24 out of his 125 games.  His best season was 1939 when he was 8-3 with a 4.43 ERA with six saves.  He only started one game that season and was credited with six saves.

2.  Elden Auker.  Auker was a longtime Tigers rotation stalwart.  He was traded to the Red Sox in a deal for Pinky Higgins in order to help shore up the Red Sox rotation behind Lefty Grove.  It did not really work out that well though as Auker went 9-10 with a 5.36 ERA.  He was one of a number of pitchers who did not care for Joe Cronin's managerial style and was sold to the Browns after the season.

3.  Jack Wilson.  Wilson was with the Red Sox from 1935 through 1941 splitting time between the rotation and the bullpen.  He had his best season in 1937 when he went 16-10 with a 3.70 ERA in 221.1 innings with seven saves.  Wilson was 67-67 with a 4.44 ERA during his Red Sox career.

  1. Nice pickups. I love how simple these old black and white cards are.
