2018 Topps Update Blaster #2

I wanted to celebrate.  The Red Sox are World Champions so I wanted to buy some cards.  Even though my last break was deplorable, I figured I would try out 2018 Topps Update again.  There are still so many Red Sox cards in it that I need.

Here is the wantlist:
2018 Topps Update: Mookie Betts AS, Mookie Betts/J.D. Martinez, Craig Kimbrel AS, Ian Kinsler, Kyle Martin, J.D. Martinez, Mitch Moreland AS, Marcus Walden

2018 Topps Update Base Variations: Wade Boggs, Roger Clemens, Ian Kinsler, J.D. Martinez, Pedro Martinez, Ted Williams

2018 Topps Update 1983: Rafael Devers, J.D. Martinez

2018 Topps Update 1983 Autographs: Tzu-Wei Lin AU

2018 Topps Update All Star Stitches: Mitch Moreland JSY

2018 Topps Update An International Affair: Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz, Ted Williams

2018 Topps Update Legends in the Making: Xander Bogaerts, Craig Kimbrel, J.D. Martinez

2018 Topps Update Postseason Preeminence: David Ortiz

2018 Topps Update Salute: Mookie Betts, Pedro Martinez, Ted Williams

2018 Topps Update Storybook Endings: David Ortiz, Ted Williams

PACK 1:
Shane Bieber (Indians: 1)
Andrew Cashner (Orioles: 1)
Trevor Story AS (Rockies: 1)
Devin Mesoraco (Mets: 1)
Chipper Jones 2018 Hall of Famer Highlights (Braves: 1)
George Brett Postseason Preeminence (Royals: 1)
Ozzie Smith Postseason Preeminence (Cardinals: 1)
Carson Kelly (Cardinals: 2)
Jordan Hicks RD (Cardinals: 3)
Brandon Crawford AS (Giants: 1)

Three Cardinals in a row is an odd pack.  That's the third time I have pulled those Carson Kelly and Jordan Hicks cards.  I have a bad feeling.

PACK 2:
Aledmys Diaz (Blue Jays: 1)
Mookie Betts AS (Red Sox: 1)
Jason Vargas (Mets: 2)
Billy Hamilton Legends in the Making Black (Reds: 1)
Ted Williams Storybook Endings (Red Sox: 2)
Lance McCullers Legends in the Making (Astros: 1)
Nelson Cruz AS (Mariners: 1)
Max Scherzer AS (Nationals: 1)
Austin Meadows (Rays: 1)
Willy Adames (Rays: 2)

Three more doubles, but a Red Sox insert and a base card.  Bonus: the Williams is a photo that has not been used thousands of times.

PACK 3:
Mike Foltynewicz AS (Braves: 2)
Teoscar Hernandez (Blue Jays: 2)
Ozzie Albies AS (Braves: 3)
Eugenio Suarez AS (Reds: 2)
Corey Dickerson (Pirates: 1)
Ronald Acuna Jr. Salute (Braves: 4)
Bob Gibson Postseason Preeminence (Cardinals: 4)
Shohei Ohtani/Ichiro (Angels: 1/Mariners: 2)
Chris Stratton (Giants: 2)
Josh Hader AS (Brewers: 1)

More triples.

PACK 4:
Yairo Munoz (Cardinals: 5)
Mike Tauchman (Rockies: 2)
Alex Bregman HR (Astros: 2)
Jonathan Villar (Orioles: 2)
Vladimir Guerrero 2018 Hall of Famer Highlights (Expos/Nationals: 2)
Jose Altuve Postseason Preeminence (Astros: 3)
Trevor Hoffman 2018 Hall of Famer Highlights (Padres: 1)
Brad Ziegler (Diamondbacks: 1)
Adam Engel (White Sox: 1)
Felipe Vasquez (Pirates: 2)

PACK 5:
Pablo Sandoval (Giants: 3)
Mike Trout AS (Angels: 2)
Brandon Morrow (Cubs: 1)
Christian Arroyo (Rays: 3)
Ketel Marte (Diamondbacks: 2)
Rickey Henderson Don't Blink (Athletics: 1)
Mike Trout 1983 (Angels: 3)
Matt Adams (Nationals: 3)
Jesmuel Valentin/Mitch Walding (Phillies: 1)
Eric Hosmer (Padres: 2)

PACK 6:
Brett Phillips (Royals: 2)
Billy McKinney (Blue Jays: 3)
Jacob DeGrom AS (Mets: 3)
Nick Kingham (Pirates: 3)
Andrew Cashner Gold (Orioles: 3)
Xander Bogaerts Legends in the Making (Red Sox: 3)
George Springer Postseason Preeminence (Astros: 4)
Jesus Aguilar HR (Brewers: 2)
Justin Verlander AS (Astros: 5)
Miles Mikolas (Cardinals: 6)

PACK 7:
Mitch Moreland AS (Red Sox: 4)
Shane Greene (Tigers: 1)
J.A. Happ AS (Blue Jays: 4)
Francisco Mejia (Padres: 3)
Ian Kinsler (Red Sox: 5)

MIke Trout Salute (Angels: 4)
Jon Lester Postseason Preeminence (Cubs: 2)
Daniel Gossett (Athletics: 2)
Kenley Jansen AS (Dodgers: 1)
Justin Anderson/Michael Hermosillo (Angels: 5)

This pack made me happy.  Two base Red Sox cards, but the Mitch Moreland All Star and the Ian Kinsler base card were two of the cards I wanted most.  Particularly since the Kinsler is my first one in my collection.  He did not work out as well as hoped, and made some brutal plays on occasion (Game 3, 13th inning, ugh), but he was one of the members of the World Series roster I still needed (Ryan Brasier is the other one).

PACK 8:
Junior Guerra (Brewers: 3)
Charlie Blackmon AS (Rockies: 3)
Wade LeBlanc (Mariners: 3)
Matt Kemp AS (Dodgers: 2)
Zack Littell (Twins: 1)

Yu Darvish An International Affair (Cubs: 3)
Jordan Hicks 1983 (Cardinals: 7)
Jeimer Candelario (Tigers: 2)
Zach Britton (Yankees: 1)
Taylor Davis (Cubs: 4)

The first Yankee card of the break.  That took awhile.  Knowing my luck there will be five more in the next two packs.

PACK 9:
Jeremy Hellickson (Nationals: 4)
Javier Baez AS (Cubs: 5)
Justin Verlander HL (Astros: 6)
Ronald Acuna Jr. (Braves: 5)
Wade LeBlanc Rainbow Foil (Mariners: 4)
Jim Thome 2018 Hall of Famer Highlights (Phillies: 2)
Lou Gehrig Postseason Preeminence (Yankees: 2)
Justin Upton/Shohei Ohtani/Mike Trout (Angels: 6)
Juan Lagares (Mets: 4)
Elieser Hernandez/Merandy Gonzalez (Marlins: 1)

PACK 10:
Andrew McCutchen (Giants: 4)
Gerson Bautista (Mets: 5)
Sam Gaviglio (Blue Jays: 5)
Tommy Pham (Rays: 4)
Kyle Schwarber HR (Cubs: 6)
Will Clark Storybook Endings (Cardinals: 8)
Craig Kimbrel Legends in the Making (Red Sox: 6)
Khris Davis Legends in the Making Blue (Athletics: 3)
Tyler Chatwood (Cubs: 7)
Dan Otero (Indians: 2)

RELIC PACK:
Miguel Cabrera Jackie Robinson Patch Red (Tigers: 3)

And the relic pack yielded a rarer parallel, that's something I suppose.

That was pretty decent.  Six Red Sox cards, including three inserts.  A nice way to celebrate.

Here are the updated team totals:

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS: 60
NEW YORK YANKEES: 57
CHICAGO CUBS: 54
BOSTON RED SOX: 51
ATLANTA BRAVES: 48
WASHINGTON NATIONALS/MONTREAL EXPOS 47 (43 NATIONALS/4 EXPOS)
LOS ANGELES DODGERS: 46
SEATTLE MARINERS: 43
CLEVELAND INDIANS: 40
HOUSTON ASTROS: 40
LOS ANGELES ANGELS: 40
MILWAUKEE BREWERS: 36
NEW YORK METS: 36
PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES: 36
CINCINNATI REDS: 35
TEXAS RANGERS: 34
TORONTO BLUE JAYS: 34
MINNESOTA TWINS: 33
BALTIMORE ORIOLES: 32
CHICAGO WHITE SOX: 32
OAKLAND ATHLETICS: 32
COLORADO ROCKIES: 29
PITTSBURGH PIRATES: 28
SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS: 28
TAMPA BAY RAYS: 28
DETROIT TIGERS: 27
SAN DIEGO PADRES: 25
MIAMI MARLINS: 24
KANSAS CITY ROYALS: 24
ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS: 19
OTHER: 6

In a startling development, the Cardinals jump way over the Yankees somehow.  The Red Sox did well, but remain in fourth place.  Next year, that might change.  In more surprising news, the Padres are gaining ground, leap-frogging the Marlins and Royals.  The Diamondbacks remain mired in last place.

As usual, everything except the Red Sox are for trade.  I anticipate sending at least a couple of packages out to some random people soon.
This is dISEMBOWELMENT, one of the primary bands that influenced the style of music that would come to be called funeral doom metal.  This is the song that most closely resembles the style.  The band did not last long, releasing just one full-length, but they were very influential.  Without dISEMBOWELMENT, we would not have Ahab, Bell Witch, and other great bands.

The Next Lin Wave

Obviously, most of the cards I have incoming lately have been Tzu-Wei Lin cards.  I have been a little surprised by some of the cards that have popped up lately.  You will see what I mean in this post.
2013 Leaf Best of Baseball.  I have never even seen this card before it showed up on Ebay recently.  Until recently, I was not even aware of it.  Now that being said, this is not a terribly impressive card.  With the lack of an MLB license, card stock and finish, the card reminds me more of some food issue oddballs from the early 1990's and not a high-end product.  It is serial-numbered to 25.

Up next are a couple of parallels of the most recent autograph card.  They did not come in the same package, but I put them together for the scan because they came on the same day:
This is the black and the gold parallels of the 2018 Topps Update 1983 Autograph of Lin.  I love these cards.  This is one of the best designs and shots for Lin cards so far.

I posted recently that this one had been available earlier in the summer but seemingly disappeared:
This is the Atomic Refractor of the 2018 Bowman Talent Pipeline card.  Groome missed the entire season.  Chavis was suspended for 80 games but came back strong and is still the team's top prospect.  Lin had a very nice season in Triple-A and will hopefully be on the Major League roster for good next season.

And next, the card I am happiest about:
This is the Finest Orange Wave Refractor, getting me one card closer to the Finest rainbow.  I now need just the Red Wave and the Superfractor.  Of course both are very rare.

And finally, another of the 1983 inserts:
This is the Red parallel, numbered to just 25.  All I need is the Platinum now, the 1/1.

I am now up to 77 Tzu-Wei Lin cards.  He appears in the 2018 Topps Archives Snapshots set now too, meaning more cards are coming.  Lin did not make it onto the World Series roster, though he did stay with the team just in case.

Air Benny

This was an awesome trade for one of those SP photo variations.  It is always nice to add these when I can.  This one is Andrew Benintendi who had a terrific rookie season that was overshadowed by the amazing rookie season of Aaron Judge.  It is very possible though that Benintendi may be the better overall player in the future.  Other than a few slumps this season, he had a great year and is a finalist for the Gold Glove Award in left field.  Do I think he will win it?  Probably not as he is going up against Alex Gordon and Brett Gardner who have a lot of history on their sides with six Gold Gloves between them.  Still, it has been a great start to Benintendi's career.

RED SOX WIN!!!!

More to come soon.

2018 Topps Update Hanger Pack

This break SUCKED.  I have already opened it and it is by far one of the worst breaks of the year, and almost certainly the worst break since I have been keeping track.  Only one Red Sox card, and it is a duplicate.  In fact, almost two-thirds of the cards pulled were duplicates.  And I only had the one blaster previously.  Horrible collation.

I'm not even going to bother posting what was on my wantlist, because nothing came off of it anyway.

Here's the break:

Topps Now Postseason Bonus #1

A couple of days ago I showed off the Topps Now Road to Opening Day bonus card.  Recently, I also purchased the Topps Now Postseason team set for the Red Sox.  I have not received that set yet, but there was the possibility for bonus cards from that set as well.  There are not as many different possibilities because the Road to Opening Day set extends into the postseason.  The only possible bonuses are if the team advances a level.  Well, Boston is in the World Series, so there will be at least two.

Here is the first one:
This card celebrates the Red Sox beating the Yankees in the ALDS three games to one.  We have Andrew Benintendi front and center, Mookie Betts at his right shoulder, and Steve Pearce at Benintendi's left shoulder high-fiving someone else.  Pearce is kind of an odd situation in my collection.  I now have four cards of him, and every one of them is a Topps Now card.  He has a few more Topps Now cards out there.  He has yet to appear in any traditional set with the Red Sox.  I thought he would be in Update, but he is not.

New Lin Cards

I was pretty excited about Topps Update, as I usually am due to the focus on player selection.  I was hoping that Tzu-Wei Lin would be in the set since he was not in Series 1 or 2.  Unfortunately, he does not have a base card in the set.  Fortunately, he does have an autograph card and its parallels.
This is his 1983 Autograph card.  Of course, Lin was born well after 1983, but still, this is a damn cool card.  There are multiple parallels of it available as well.  I have snatched up most of the them, so keep an eye out here.

Topps Now Road to Opening Day Bonus #7

Okay, maybe I will just take a break if I don't get any new cards in.  That was not the case yesterday when I received two packages.  I will show off one package today and another tomorrow.

The Road to Opening Day purchase keeps on giving.  There have now been seven bonus Red Sox cards.  I forgot that it extended into the postseason.  Which is great, because now we have this:
Brock Holt became the very first player to hit for the cycle in a postseason game when he did it on October 8, 2018 during Boston's 16-1 drubbing of the Yankees in Game 3 of the ALDS.  Holt homered in the ninth inning off of Yankees catcher Austin Romine who was pitching a mop-up inning to cap off the cycle.  This is the second time in his career that Holt has hit for the cycle.

Might be Taking a Little Break

This is just going to be a short break.  I am going to be watching the World Series, and just don't have the enthusiasm to post right now when something this exciting is going on.  I will be back when it is over, with lots to discuss.  It is entirely possible I will post when I get cards in, and I have several coming, including a bunch of Lin cards.

2018 Topps Update Blaster

I have been eagerly anticipating Topps Update for some time.  This is always one of my favorite sets because of the great player collection.  You can always expect the All Stars, but you also get midseason acquisitions, some of whom will not be with the team after this one year, and rookies.  I was hoping Tzu-Wei Lin would show up, and he does, but only with an autograph card.  That is kind of disappointing, but still, more cards to chase.

Here is the Red Sox wantlist:

I pulled four Red Sox, which is decent, though there is still quite a bit more work to be done on this set.  The Yankees are pulling away from the other teams, which is basically what I have always expected.  The Padres had a decent showing finally.
