2018 Donruss Optic Value Pack and Topps Big League Blaster

I am still doing this thing here.  I picked up a value pack of 2018 Donruss Optic and a blaster of Topps Big League.

Up first is the Donruss Optic.  This pack contains 16 cards.  These are the cards from my Red Sox wantlist:

2018 Donruss Optic: Andrew Benintendi, Andrew Benintendi VAR, Mookie Betts, Mookie Betts DK, Rafael Devers RR, Rafael Devers RR VAR, Dustin Pedroia, Chris Sale

2018 Donruss Optic Autographs: Aneury Tavarez AU

2018 Donruss Optic Looking Back: Chris Sale/Roger Clemens

2018 Donruss Optic Mound Marvels: Chris Sale

2018 Donruss Optic Out of this World: J.D. Martinez

2018 Donruss Optic Premiere Rookies: Rafael Devers

2018 Donruss Optic Rated Rookie Retro 1984: Rafael Devers

And here is the break:
Gerrit Cole (Astros: 1)
Odubel Herrera (Phillies: 1)
Justin Turner (Dodgers: 1)
Salvador Perez (Royals: 1)
Joey Votto (Reds: 1)
Cal Ripken Jr. (Orioles: 1)
Giancarlo Stanton Carolina Blue (Yankees: 1)
Stephen Strasburg Purple (Nationals: 1)

Well, the first half was nothing special.  Of course the best card I am likely to get in the pack is the Stanton card, numbered to 50.  Damn Yankees.

Josh Bell Purple DK (Pirates: 1)
Chris Sale Purple (Red Sox: 1)
Nicky Delmonico Purple RR (White Sox: 1)
Albert Pujols Year in Review (Angels: 1)
Adrian Beltre DK (Rangers: 1)
Harrison Bader RR (Cardinals: 1)
Ozzie Albies RR VAR (Braves: 1)
Aaron Judge All Stars (Yankees: 2)

Of course the Yankees are the only team with more than one card in the pack.  Always frustrating when that happens.  The Angels finally made an appearance after sitting out the Topps Fire box.  Still no Diamondbacks card though.  I received just one Red Sox card and it is one I already had.  So no progress on my wantlist in the Donruss Optic pack.

I am going to start the team breakdown from above over again, since this is a different set.  I will have team totals at the bottom, added to the totals from before.

Topps Big League is one of my favorite sets this year.  There are still a ton of cards for me to find too.  There are five packs of ten cards and one four-pack of Blue parallels.  This is what is on my wantlist, which does not include parallels or autographs:

2018 Topps Big League: Andrew Benintendi, Mookie Betts, Mookie Betts SK, Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Roger Clemens ATG, Rafael Devers, Craig Kimbrel, Craig Kimbrel SK, Tzu-Wei Lin, Pedro Martinez ATG, Mitch Moreland, Dustin Pedroia, Rick Porcello, Chris Sale, Chris Sale SK, Chris Sale SK, Chris Sale SK, Chris Sale SK, Ted Williams ATG

2018 Topps Big League Players Weekend Nickname Variation: Andrew Benintendi, Mookie Betts, Rafael Devers

Before we get into the packs, this is a blaster and there is also a card to cut out on the box.  There are four players available, none of whom are Red Sox.  There is one Yankee, which I avoided.  This is mine:

Shohei Ohtani (Angels: 1)

Blue Parallel Pack:
Edwin Diaz (Mariners: 1)
Kenyan Middleton (Angels: 2)
Jose Altuve/Avisail Garcia/Eric Hosmer (Astros: 1/White Sox: 1/Royals: 1)
Ronald Acuna Jr. (Braves: 1)

Well, not much exciting here.  The Acuna might draw some interest.

PACK 1:
Nicholas Castellanos (Tigers: 1)
Buster Posey (Giants: 1)
Corey Kluber (Indians: 1)
Ryon Healy (Mariners: 2)
Elvis Andrus (Rangers: 1)

Trey Mancini (Orioles: 1)
Bo Jackson (Royals: 2)
James McCann (Tigers: 2)
Ernie Banks (Cubs: 1)
Trevor Bauer Gold (Indians: 2)

I like the Bo Jackson.  He was hugely famous when I was first getting into cards.

PACK 2:
Parker Bridwell (Angels: 3)
Jose Altuve (Astros: 2)
Albert Almora Jr. (Cubs: 2)
Gerardo Parra (Rockies: 1)
Gerrit Cole (Astros: 3)

Kenley Jansen (Dodgers: 1)
Jose Ramirez (Indians: 3)
Ernie Banks Statue BL (Cubs: 3)
Cody Bellinger Ministers of Mash (Dodgers: 2)
Michael Fulmer Gold (Tigers: 3)

A lot of teams are jumping out in front and a lot of teams have yet to make an appearance, including the Red Sox and Yankees.  This will likely not last.

PACK 3:
Kyle Seager (Mariners: 3)
Nick Markakis (Braves: 2)
Danny Duffy (Royals: 3)
Craig Kimbrel (Red Sox: 1)
Bricks and Ivy BL (Cubs: 4)

Kole Calhoun (Angels: 4)
Brandon Drury (Yankees: 1)
Aaron Judge/Khris Davis/Joey Gallo (Yankees: 2/Athletics: 1/Rangers: 2)
Josh Donaldson Players Weekend Variation (Blue Jays: 1)
Matt Moore Gold (Rangers: 3)

And here come the Red Sox and Yankees.  I like the Players Weekend Variation cards.  There are three Red Sox to get.

PACK 4:
Carlos Martinez (Cardinals: 1)
Tim Beckham (Orioles: 2)
Domingo Santana (Brewers: 1)
J.A. Happ (Blue Jays: 2)
Minnie and Paul BL (Twins: 1)

Zack Cozart (Angels: 5)
Joey Votto/Matt Carpenter/Kris Bryant (Reds: 1/Cardinals: 2/Cubs: 5)
Marcus Stroman (Blue Jays: 3)
Nicky Delmonico Rookie Republic Auto (White Sox: 2)
Francisco Lindor Gold (Indians: 4)

I did not expect an auto.  I'm not sure how good Delmonico is, but maybe someone will want this.

PACK 5:
Jose Urena (Marlins: 1)
Andrew Cashner (Orioles: 3)
Mookie Betts (Red Sox: 2)
Dylan Bundy (Orioles: 4)
Nelson Cruz/Aaron Judge/Khris Davis (Mariners: 4/Yankees: 3/Athletics: 2)

Jose Abreu (White Sox: 3)
Clayton Kershaw/Max Scherzer/Stephen Strasburg (Dodgers: 3/Nationals: 1)
Jason Vargas (Mets: 1)
Justin Verlander Rainbow Foil (Astros: 4)
Mariano Rivera Gold (Yankees: 4)

Mookie Betts makes his obligatory appearance.  I love the action shot though.

So here is the updated team by team breakdown with the new stuff added on:
Chicago Cubs: 17
New York Yankees: 15
Boston Red Sox: 14
Cleveland Indians: 10
Houston Astros: 10
Seattle Mariners: 10
St. Louis Cardinals: 9
Oakland Athletics: 8
Chicago White Sox: 8
Texas Rangers: 8
Baltimore Orioles: 7
Kansas City Royals: 7
Los Angeles Dodgers: 7
Washington Nationals/Montreal Expos: 7 (1 Expo, 6 Nationals)
Atlanta Braves: 6
Detroit Tigers: 6
Los Angeles Angels: 6
Pittsburgh Pirates: 6
Toronto Blue Jays: 6
Colorado Rockies: 5
Milwaukee Brewers: 5
New York Mets: 5
Cincinnati Reds: 4
Miami Marlins: 3
Philadelphia Phillies: 3
Minnesota Twins: 2
San Francisco Giants: 2
San Diego Padres: 1
Tampa Bay Rays: 1
Arizona Diamondbacks: 0

The Cubs retain the lead, but the Yankees passed the Red Sox, which was annoying and unsurprising given my statements in the first post.  The Red Sox stay close though.  The Angels jumped from none to the middle of the pack.  It is a good thing I am not a Diamondbacks fan.  174 cards into this experiment and no Diamondbacks yet, which is somewhat weird given the fact that the team does have some star players like Paul Goldschmidt and Zack Greinke.

As usual, everything except the Betts and Kimbrel is up for trade.

  1. What kind of insane world are we living in where it's easier to pull a Marlin than a *checks notes* Phillie, Twin, Giant or Diamondback :P?
