Well, I bought my first 2017 cards. I was at Walmart and bought one of those $9.99 hanger packs. I did not want to spend a lot of money, but I wanted a reasonable chance at some Red Sox cards.
I did pretty well. Of course they were all base, but five cards out of the hanger pack is a pretty impressive showing. The second card I pulled was the Jackie Bradley Jr. card, a good sign for the rest of the pack, and hopefully for the year. The only other standard base card was Dustin Pedroia. The last three are all League Leaders cards. Ortiz led the league in RBIs, Porcello in wins, and the Betts is an odd one. Betts led the league in at-bats and total bases, but this card shows him as second in the batting race. I'm not sure why Topps did that, he was .02 behind leader Jose Altuve, so he was not really all that close. This was a pretty good showing. I will be buying some more, but not a ton.
5 Sox in a hanger box is not bad at all - especially the JBJ. (What is Topps calling that, a rainbow? foil? rainbow foil?)
ReplyDeleteI think the reason Betts has a card for being 2nd is that Topps used to cram the top three league leaders onto one card and now they're getting their own card - which is good for team collectors (I'm no fan of those multi-team cards cause I sort all commons by team) but it is a bit odd to have a League Leader card of a player who didn't actually lead the league.
I agree, Chris. I just got the Dustin Pedroia LL and it shows him 3rd in the batting race.
