I have mentioned many times that the best thing about Topps Now is getting cards of obscure players who may not get cards anywhere else. So whenever such a player shows up on a Topps Now card, I grab them. Romy Gonzalez seemed like such a player at one point last year and this is the first card of him in my Red Sox collection. I have gotten a couple more cards since then, but that didn't seem incredibly likely at the time.
Gonzalez walked off the Rays on May 14, 2024 after coming in as a pinch runner for Dominic Smith (who sadly never did get a Red Sox card). In his only at-bat of the game, he singled in Connor Wong in the bottom of the 12th inning.
Gonzalez has been a big part of the team's success in recent weeks and is putting together a great season. Not bad for a player who the Chicago White Sox cut loose, of all teams.
